Facials & Peels
Facials are no downtime, customized skincare treatments designed to maintain or improve skin by using targeted ingredients to cleanse, moisturize, improve tone and texture, and clear pores to improve acne and prevent breakouts. Both men and women of any age can benefit from facials, whether you have specific skin concerns or just want healthy looking skin.
We recommend regular facial treatments every 4-6 weeks to help maintain skin health. They promote healthy circulation beneath the skin and when performed routinely, can help slow the onset of wrinkles, reduce facial puffiness and sagging, and promote skin renewal leading the way to clearer, firmer, more vibrant, healthier looking skin.
Chemical peels are one of the most effective treatments for turning over damaged skin cells so the face can return to a natural glow.
We offer a number of chemical peels depending on your specific skin type, condition, and aesthetic goal.
We want to help you to achieve radiant, healthy-looking skin.
A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face or neck. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Let one of our licensed aestheticians consult with you to determine which chemical peel will bring you the best results.
Most everyone desires a smooth, radiant complexion for a youthful appearance. However, this can be difficult to achieve; with so many lotions and creams on the market today claiming to give you results, it can be frustrating when you are not seeing positive changes. At Salzman Cosmetic Surgery and Spa, we offer chemical peels for quick, amazing results.
HOW DOES A CHEMICAL PEEL WORK?
During a chemical peel treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin. This solution dissolves the upper layers of the skin, removing dead and damaged skin cells. The skin then heals itself with newer, smoother skin. At our med spa, we offer a variety of chemical peels, including VI Aesthetics peels.
Chemical peels are one of the least invasive options to improve the look of your skin. There are many benefits associated with peels, including:
Quick Results: Creams and lotions can only do so much. Peels can get you the smooth skin your desire, faster.
Promotes Collagen Production: Chemical peels exfoliate the skin, thereby helping to stimulate collagen production and cell renewal for younger-looking skin.
Boosts Confidence: Peels can result in a radiant, smooth complexion, which can result in a major confidence boost!
Reasonable Cost: With chemical peels, you can count on reliable results without spending hundreds of dollars on the latest anti-aging products.
If you are located in the Louisville or Lexington areas and are interested in a smoother, more radiant complexion, contact us today to schedule a free consultation with our Aesthetician Maria.
Why get a chemical peel?
Chemical Peels are non-invasive and contain active chemical exfoliants that help restore skin surface and appearance. Peels help speed up the process of cellular turnover by shedding dead surface cells to reveal brighter and renewed skin. Chemical peels come in a range of intensities with different active ingredients to target various skin concerns - fine lines and wrinkles, acne prone, hyperpigmented or uneven skin as they help build collagen and resurface the skin.
As we age, dead skin cells do not slough off as easily as when we are younger, causing the skin to appear dull. Light, medium and deep chemical peels are a popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure used to peel away the skin’s top layer to improve sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented and wrinkled skin. Improving the evenness of color and texture in your skin creates a youthful look and restores a healthy, luminous and radiant appearance.
Are you a good candidate for a chemical peel?
The following are some common reasons why you may want to consider a chemical peel:
You have sun-damaged skin
You have significant facial wrinkling
Your skin color is uneven with blotchiness, sunspots and brown spots
You have scars that have made the surface of your skin uneven
Other characteristics of your skin, such as its thickness and texture, may influence whether you are a good candidate for chemical peels.
If you are in good general health, have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.
How is a chemical peel procedure performed?
Peels involve the application of a chemical solution to your entire face or just to certain regions, such as the crow’s feet area around your eyes or the vertical wrinkles around your mouth. Chemical peels can also improve skin conditions on the neck, décolletage, arms, back, shoulders and legs.
The chemical solution is applied onto the skin being treated using a cotton pad, swab, or brush (avoiding your brows, eyes and lips). During peel application, you may experience a slight tingling (light to medium peels) or a burning sensation (deep peels). These sensations are usually minimal for light and medium peels but can be more severe for deep peels.
The different types of chemical peels vary according to their specific ingredients and their strength. The depth of their peeling action may also be determined by factors such as how long they remain on the skin and how they are applied onto the skin.
No covering or after-peel ointment is necessary after a light or medium peel and you can expect little to no downtime. However, after a deep peel, a thick coating of petroleum jelly or other protective ointment is layered over the face, covering the protective crust that develops rapidly over the area. This stays in place for one to two days. In some cases, dressings, tape or a bandage may be applied (this is particularly effective in cases of severe wrinkling). A deep peel requires a longer recuperation period.
Chemical peels exfoliate dead cells and can improve texture, acne, sun damage and congested pores. Deeper peels can address wrinkles and uneven skin tone.
What are my options?
Your options will depend on the treatment depth you require and your professional will recommend an approach based upon your aesthetic goals. The amount of time you can allow for recovery may be an important factor to consider when selecting a particular chemical peel or determining the extent of treatment.
Light to Medium Peels
Glycolic (AHA) peel
Generally, the most superficial peels are those using alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), such as glycolic, lactic or fruit acid. AHA peels can reduce the effects of aging and sun damage including fine wrinkling and brown spots. Sometimes a single treatment with an AHA peel will give your skin a fresher, healthier appearance and a radiant glow. No anesthesia is needed and you will only feel a tingling or mild stinging sensation when the solution is applied. Immediately after the procedure, you generally will be able to wear makeup and you can drive yourself home or back to work. Various concentrations of an AHA may be applied weekly or at longer intervals to further improve the texture of your skin. Your professional Esthetician will recommend a maintenance program using professional quality products that you can apply at home on a regular basis.
Trichloracetic (TCA) acid peel
A TCA peel is a stronger, medium depth peel. TCA peels are often used for the treatment of wrinkles, skin pigment changes and blemishes. Many patients can benefit from having TCA applied not only on the face but also on the neck and other parts of the body that have been exposed to the sun. For spot peeling of limited areas such as around the mouth or eyes, TCA formulas are often preferred because they have a reduced bleaching effect compared to solutions containing phenol, another popular peeling agent. We have found TCA to be effective in treating darker-skinned patients. Milder TCA peels can be repeated frequently in order to achieve cumulative effects or TCA can be used to achieve a medium or even a deep peel, depending on the acid concentration and manner of application.
A phenol peel is a deep peel that is sometimes recommended for treating severe wrinkles (from fine lines to deep creases), sun damage, uneven skin tone and texture and may be used in the treatment of precancerous skin conditions. Phenol is particularly useful for minimizing the vertical lines that often form around the mouth as a result of aging. Deep peels take longer to perform and can leave a visible effect on the skin and limited from sun exposure. There is a burning sensation, but it is relieved somewhat because the solution also acts as an anesthetic. Phenol often has a significant bleaching effect and you may need to wear makeup in order for the treated portions of your skin to more closely match the skin color of the surrounding areas. Phenol cannot be used on your neck or other parts of your body.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a treatment used to improve the appearance of skin on the face, neck or hands. A chemical solution is applied to the skin to exfoliate the dead skin cells and eventually peel off revealing the fresh, new skin underneath. The new skin won’t have as much wear and tear so it’s more youthful and healthy looking.

A 3 step system which is suitable for all skin types, the 3-Step Stimulation Peel from ZO Medical is designed to exfoliate the top layers of skin and stimulate cellular function in the skin’s deeper layers whilst calming and soothing the skin. It’s a system which means little or no downtime and is now available at Juvea Aesthetics.
When you come in for the 3 step stimulating peel, your expert practitioner will follow the below steps:
Step 1- This is the application of the peel solution itself. A blend of salicylic, trichloracetic, and lactic acids, these ingredients minimise inflammation and help hydrate the skin.
Step 2- Stimulating Retinol Creme. This is applied after the peel solution, and works to stimulate cellular function at a deep level for collagen enhancement, firming, and wrinkle reduction.
Step 3- Application of the Calming Creme Post Procedure Skin Relief. This cream is used as a finishing product to minimise any inflammation and irritation that may result after the first two steps, and restore moisture.
After the peel, your skin may have a yellow tone but this is completely normal and when you wash your face the next day, this will have disappeared. You may also notice your skin begin to lightly peel the next day but this will only last for a couple of days.
The great thing about this Zo Mediacl 3 Step Stimulating Peel is that it is suitable for all skin types and tones. For best results we recommend around 3 peel treatments spaced 6 weeks apart. You will see the difference instantly and you will notice your skin is tighter, smoother and brighter-looking with a healthy glow!
One of our core philosophies is that skin treatments shouldn’t simply provide a quick fix or a cover up. Instead, the goal is to promote long-term, sustainable skin health. One way to achieve this is using our ZO® Skin Health 3-Step Peel.
A highly effective treatment for many signs of skin aging, including melasma (a condition that causes dark patches on the face), sun damage, fine lines, uneven texture, large pores, dullness, and acne. With this peel, patients will achieve glowing results and tighter, smoother, brighter-looking skin, after the peeling process is completed (about one week). Typically, peeling begins between day two and three. Treatments should be repeated three times a year for a deeper repair as a part of a long-term skin health plan. Talk with our provider about scheduling and how to prepare for the peel – it’s so worth it!
*Pre-conditioning your skin is required for six to eight weeks prior to the application of this peel. Pre-conditioning - we will help you to prepare your skin using a customized ZO Skin Health regimen to make it strong and tolerant before and after the peel.
Chemical peels are extremely popular in the medical and cosmetic industry a method used to resurface and exfoliate the skin
The purpose of a chemical peel is to slough off dead skin revealing newer, fresher skin for anti-ageing purposes to give you a radiant glow. There are many different types of chemical peels out in the market most popular are; Glycolic acid peels a type of AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid), Salycilic acid a BHA (beta hydroxyl acid), Jessner and Phenol peels. Chemical peels are classified according to their depth of penetration, depending on the condition of the skin and skin type.
Aesthetics Inc. are famous for chemical skin peels and with many years of experience aesthetics inc provide a variety of different peels for every skin condition and safe peels for darker skin tones. All chemical peels penetration depth can be controlled by the physician depending on; the time the peel is left on the skin, how many layers of the peel is applied, skins permeability, was the skin prepped before the peel, the condition/state the skin is in and the concentration of the peel solution.
At Aesthetics Inc. we use 40% TCA, for superficial or medium depth penetration depending on the physical state of the skin, which is controlled by the physician. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) has anti-ageing benefits by sloughing off dead skin cells, stimulating the growth of collagen. The aim of the acid is to remove imperfections, improving the appearance, elasticity and texture of the skin.
The Science Behind TCA – How It Works
Like all chemical peels, the objective is to remove the top layers of dead skin. The skin is made up from a protein called keratin. Just how our hair and nails grow, so does our skin. Every day our skin cells are constantly shedding by the epidermis in a process called keratinisation. As we age our cell turnover slows down, hence a build up of dead skin cells (thick stratum corneum) causing a dull, sallow appearance to our skin. Therefore chemical peels give us a helping hand to speed up the cell turnover to reveal fresh new, healthy skin.
Benefits From A TCA Peel
Improve overall skin texture and tone, Reduce fine lines and wrinkles, Anti ageing purposes, Reduce brown spots and freckles, Improve sun/photo damaged skin, Improves Melasma, Comedonal acne, Pigmentation.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a chemical solution that is applied to the skin. The solution causes the layer of skin to separate and peel off. The new regenerated skin underneath is usually smoother, less wrinkled and more even in both tone and colour than the old skin.
Your skin may flake after 3-5 days. Not all patients shed skin in the same way, as all patients are different. Rest assured you will not shed your skin completely like a snake! When you do start to peel, do not rub the skin harshly or use exfoliant products. These can cause redness and irritation and possible infection. Continue to use the moisturising cream prescribed by aesthetics inc.

The Peel Program
NeoStrata Glycolic peels can improve oily/acne prone skin. Higher strengths can help to reduce the appearance of acne scarring and certain pigmentation problems. Nesotrata peels can be used on the face, the neck, the chest and the hands and can be used on all types of skin including: fine skin, normal skin, greasy or thick skin.
The NeoStrata Skin Rejuvenation System is a glycolic acid peel system that can only be performed as clinical procedure by a trained professional. It provides controlled and predictable removal of surface skin cells, stimulating skin renewal to improve the appearance of the skin. You will notice a difference in your skin texture immediately. The procedure is fast and convenient, taking only about fifteen minutes. And with virtually no recovery time, you can be back to your normal routine the same day. There is no significant pain or discomfort.
It takes usually 4-6 treatments at three to four week intervals to achieve the desired effects. Most patients can undergo glycolic peels without any side effects.
The treated skin is virtually normal in appearance. The fact that the patient underwent a peel is usually undetectable to others. Patients may experience mild sloughing, peeling, redness is temporary and norm
A glycolic acid peel treatment is a specific technique for skin renewal which removes the damaged layer of surface skin cells and reveals fresh healthy skin beneath whilst stimulating cell rebuilding and restructuring of deeper skin layers.
Glycolic Acid is an AHA, or alpha-hydroxyacid which is a group of naturally occurring substances often called ‘fruit acids’ because they are found naturally in various fruits. In fact, Glycolic acid is found in sugar cane juice. Dermatologists have long praised the positive results of AHA treatments due to their benefits in improving skin appearance and texture.
This treatment is great for making skin appear smoother, healthier and tighter with a more even skin texture and tone. Great for those with dry skin, oily and acne-prone skin, and also beneficial in reducing pigmentation such as age/sun spots.
Jessner’s Peel is a mild cosmetic peel to treat aged and/or sun-damaged skin and to make hyper-pigmented areas lighter for an overall smoother, more consistent look of the skin.
Jessner’s Peel can be used with all skin types to also treat mild or even severe acne, sun damage, mild to moderate wrinkles, and discoloration. This technique is advantageous when compared to others because it is also acceptable to use on the hands, neck, and upper chest.
Those with particularly oily skin often especially benefit from a Jessmer’s peel. This is because it tends to open up clogged pores and reduce oil production. Since plugged sebaceous follicles and excess oil are common factors in acne, this type of peel tends to aid in the healing of acne conditions.
The exfoliation of the skin produced by a combination of resorcinol, salicylic acid, lactic acid. A licensed dermatologist is required because this procedure more deeply penetrates the outer layers of skin than more minimal chemical peels. Evidence of this more substantial effect occurs 3-4 days following the peel, when noticeable exfoliation and flaking appears. This process of renewal continues for about one week total. The final result, only a week after the treatment, is the revealing of a smoother and healthier skin layer.
This is a peel of medium depth that requires a dermatologist to perform, and addresses more substantial skin damage than lighter peels can address. To begin the procedure, dermatologists use a glycolic cleanser to thoroughly remove the skin oils and the “horny” layer to allow a better penetration of the chemicals that will be applied. The Jessner’s solution is then spread over the face. A slight burning sensation is often felt by the patient, but this effect can be reduced by a fan blowing cool air in the area. Finally, your dermatologist will apply an acid neutralizer, and the solution will be washed off with cool water. Flaking and peeling will will occur for approximately seven days. The skin then turns pink or brown as healthy, younger-looking, more vibrant skin is revealed.
What is a Jessner’s Peel?
The Jessner’s Peel is a solution consisting of 14% lactic acid and 14% salicylic acid (AHA) peeling agent with a resorcinol solvent. This is a strong chemical peel that is known for delivering great results.
Why choose a Jessner’s Peel?
A Jessner’s peel achieves a more thorough peel than a Glycolic Acid peel also known as AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) peel. Besides being an excellent facial treatment, a Jessner’s peel can be used to lighten areas of hyperpigmentation and to treat acne, acne-scarred, photo damaged and aging skin.
Jessner peel is a cosmetological procedure aimed at improving skin's state and appearance with the help of a special chemical solution. Like all chemical peels, Jessner peel can be superficial, intended for the upper, horny layer of skin. In this case, the peel is applied once. If necessary, two or three layers are applied to affect the whole depth of epidermis.
This procedure does not influence basilemma – the interlayer carrying the epithelial layer and separating it from subcutaneous tissue. Such peel is considered medium-depth.
Anything that penetrates deeper than basilemma is called deep peel. But this does not refer to Jessner peel, a fairly sparing procedure which allows noticeable skin rejuvenation without plastic surgery.
Substantial features of this peel comprise not only removal of horned epidermis to a certain depth, but also active regeneration of skin cells.
Indications for Use of Jessner Peel:
- Post acne (skin defects after acne)
- Hyper pigmentation, especially after pregnancy
- Enlarged pores
- Increased skin oiliness
- First fine lines and wrinkles
- Ingrown hairs on face
- Scars and imperfections on face
Contraindications are the following:
- Suppurative inflammations (furunculosis, impetigo)

- Solution of skin continuity
- Pregnancy and breast-feeding
- Fungal dermatitis: ringworm, microsporia

Warning: for dark-complexioned patients a pre-peel test before the procedure is compulsory.
The peel is performed with care if the patient has demodicosis since aggravation is possible. Jessner peel is also not recommended during spring and summer because of active natural insolation.
Composition and Effects of Jessner Peel
Jessner peel is a 3-component mixture of the following composition: lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol. Sometimes other components like citric or glycolic acid, isopropyl alcohol are added to the solution.
The effect of peel is determined by its active components.
Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid with exfoliating and whitening effect. It also stimulates the synthesis of collagen, a special protein that makes skin elastic and firm.
Lactic acid is significantly softer and lighter than other fruit acids. This is why it is mainly recommended for delicate skin prone to hyper responsiveness.
Lactic acid has another substantial advantage: a unique ability to bind, retain, evenly distribute and direct moisture into deep layers of skin. This is why addition of lactic acid into Jessner peel solution was a wise decision: it sustains the moisture balance of epidermis.
Jessner peel comprises 14% concentrated lactic acid.
Salicylic acid has a keratolytic, light drying (when sebum is excessive), antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect. It eases itching and increases epithelization of superficial skin defects. The concentration of salicylic acid in a classic Jessner peel is 14%.
Resorcinol is the third active component of the peel which intensifies the action of the acids. In most cases, peel includes 14% concentrated resorcinol. This component has an antibacterial, styptic, whitening and cauterant effect.
Thus, due to the thoroughly balanced proportions of Jessner peel components, patients are able to get rid of hyperkeratosis and increased skin oiliness, to minimize the number and the depth of wrinkles. The complexion is evened out, skin moisture balance is optimized. The lifting effect of the peel can be compared to the effects of mesotherapy and plastic surgery.
As a result of the peel, skin is renewed and rejuvenated.
Jessner peel is stored in dark glass containers, thoroughly corked, in a cool place, because resorcinol darkens under the sun and in the air.
Advantages of Jessner peel:
- Unlike other medium-depth chemical peels, Jessner peel is practically safe in relation to side effects. It leaves no scars or post-peel pigmentation since the aesthetic technician can control the depth of acid penetration and predetermine the result.
- Various peel procedures are possible (superficial, superficial-medium, medium-depth, deep peel) depending on the number of layers applied.
- Jessner peel is ideal for acne prone skin. The quantity of acne is noticeably reduced after several procedures. Post acne scars are treated even more successfully due to the optimally balanced peel composition.
- Post-peel rehabilitation after superficial Jessner peel comprises only a few procedures and soon allows leading customary lifestyle, excluding exposure to sunrays.
- Medium and deep Jessner peel is a perfect alternative to plastic surgery when the first signs of skin aging appear.
- Intensive flaking is observed in practically all cases which, in the opinion of many clients, is a sign of a good result.
Jessner’s peel is a superficial chemical peel, resulting in destruction of part or all of the epidermis with keratolytic activity. Jessner’s solution includes 14 g of resorcinol, 14 g of salicylic acid, and 14 mL of lactic acid (85%), and add sufficient quantity to 100 mL ethyl alcohol (95%). It is mainly recommended for treatment of photoaging (fine lines, actinic keratosis, solar lentigines), pigmentary disorders (melasma, post-inflammatory), and acne.

Jessner's chemical peel solution is comprised of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol to treat fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation irregularities, and acne scarring. The modified Jessner's peel replaces resorcinol with TCA, glycolic acid, and other AHAs for an effective, medium depth exfoliation.
About the Procedure
The Jessner solution has been used for over 100 years as a chemically exfoliating treatment to improve acne as well as pigmentation irregularities such as hyperpigmentation, photodamage, and melasma. Jessner's solution is unique in that it combines multiple chemical exfoliators in one peel. The traditional Jessner peel combines salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol. The salicylic acid is a BHA used for its exfoliating properties, lactic acid for its moisturizing effect, and resorcinol as an antiseptic. Resorcinol has since been replaced by other AHAs such as glycolic, mandelic, azelaic, and phytic acid due to health concerns related to its toxicity and effect on the nervous system. When resorcinol is not used in the the Jessner solution, it is considered a modified Jessner peel. First, the skin will be evaluated. Once it is determined the patient is a good candidate for the peel and all pretreatment skincare has been completed, the peel can be performed. The skin will be cleansed to remove any dirt or oils. Next, the Jessner solution will be brushed onto the skin. Typically, 2 coats will be applied for a superficial peel however, additional layers may be applied for a deeper peel. No neutralizing agent needs to be applied after a Jessner peel. After application, a moisturizing cream or lotion will be applied to the skin. Patients are able to resume normal activity after the peel is applied and should wash the treatment area 4-5 hours post-procedure. Depending on the AHAs used in the peel and the concentration, some patients may be asked to leave the solution on for up to 2 days. Be sure to follow the specific aftercare instructions given by your provider.
The goal of a Jessner peel is to improve the appearance and texture of the skin by chemically exfoliating away wrinkles, sun-damage, skin discolorations, blotchiness, brown spots, and scars.
Dermaplaning is a safe and gentle superficial exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and fine facial hair using a disposable scalpel. It diminishes the look of fine lines and is a great way to reveal fresh, smoother, healthy looking skin. Light-skinned clients may be better candidates due to the possibility of causing skin discoloration. We recommend dermaplaning every 4-6 weeks and can only be performed on clear skin. Skin with active acne, cold sores, fever blisters, or rashes may worsen with dermaplaning.
Dermaplaning may be added to any facial treatment.
